In 2012, a year 2 class of six year olds, at Rolleston school, began exploring the image of a dancing circle through observational drawing, abstract drawing, photography, painting and finally sculpture. Through out this project the children began to express a desire to see their dancing sculptures made life size and placed in the community. They wanted to contribute to the beautification of Rolleston, and even though they were young they believed they could do this.
Four years on this project has now become not just for the community but by the community.
The local Rolleston Men’s Shed has joined the project and have taken on the task of constructing the dancing figures and the Rolleston Reserves Management Committee have approved the placement of 18 of the sculptures on 3 different Rolleston Reserves.
The sculptures will be constructed out of 2 inch steel pipe which will then be powder coated. The children intend that people will interact with their sculptures, play around them and ‘copy the moves.’ The children have designed each sculpture to have a polished stainless steel face, a mirror, so that while people are interacting with the sculptures, the mirror will actually allow them to become part of the sculpture.
We are currently looking for sponsorship to help cover the costs of constructing these sculptures. Each sculpture will cost $600 to make. Those who sponsor a sculpture will have their name displayed on the sculpture, as an acknowledgement of their support and contribution.
